EYE EXAMINATION All eye examinations are free of charge to residents of the UK, funded by NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government (subject to NHS recall guidelines). Our eye examinations allow us to fully assess your vision, correct any vision problems and importantly detect many diseases which may affect the health of your eyes and indeed your general health too. We use advanced technology and techniques throughout the examination with all stages fully explained. All the results of the examination will be discussed with you in a very relaxed environment with plenty of time to answer any questions you may have.
LENSES As an independent practice we can offer lenses from a vast selection of manufacturers including local Edinburgh manufacturers too. This ensures the lens you choose is the most beneficial to correct your vision and suits your budget . We consider your vision needs, occupation, lifestyle and personal preferences when helping you choose the most suitable lens correction. Single Vision Lenses- these lenses have only one power covering the entire lens. Varifocal Lenses- this lens type look exactly like single vision lenses but allow you to see clearly at all distances from near to far. Bifocal Lenses- these lenses have two different powers on the one lens, usually distance and near powers. Various types of bifocal lenses are available depending on you needs. Occupational or Task Specific Varifocals – again these lenses look like a single vision lens with no visible bifocal line. They allow the wearer to look at tasks close up with clarity and also look ahead for a short distance. These lenses are particularly helpful for anyone using a computer, giving a very wide view of the screen.

REPAIR SERVICE Davidson’s Mains Optometrists offers a glasses and frame repair service for your existing glasses. Repairs can often be carried out in the practice while you wait.

COLOURED OVERLAY ASSESSMENT We have coloured overlay assessment appointments available to determine if the use of a specific coloured overlay sheet could reduce problems reading text such as -Blurring of words -Perceived glare from viewing text with an over sensitivity to bright lights -Words and/or letters appearing as if moving around -Difficulty tracking words across a page of text Coloured overlay assessments must be done after a recent full eye examination has been undertaken in order to assess and correct if necessary, any eye problems and any vision problems should this be necessary. If any specific colour is shown to improve the reading ability of an individual, we stock and supply the overlays. Current research suggests those individuals diagnosed with dyslexia often benefit from using a coloured overlay to improve their reading ability.

CONTACT LENSES We offer a full contact lens fitting service and also offer contact lens check appointments to existing contact lens wearers. As an independent practice we have access to all brands of contact lenses and all suppliers, giving you lots of options to try the most up to date contact lens materials and technology to ensure very comfortable contact lenses with the best vision possible. Contact lenses can be daily disposable lenses with no need to clean them. They can be a monthly change contact lens to be worn each day, with a new fresh pair worn every month and there is also an option for a two weekly change contact lens. For anyone aged over 40 and needing a separate power to read with, there is the option of multifocal contact lenses too. These allow for clear vision in the distance and at near. Special contact lenses are also available for those with astigmatism, where the eye tends to be shaped similar to a rugby ball. All these choices mean contact lenses are now a successful option for nearly everyone who wears glasses!

LENS TREATMENTS Advancements in manufacturing and technology mean our lenses can now be made thinner and lighter by using different lens materials. Thin and Lightweight Lenses - these are especially beneficial to those people with higher prescriptions needed to correct their vision. The lenses can be made up to 40% thinner and lighter in weight than standard lens materials. Anti-Scratch Treatments – this enhances the durability of the lens, meaning the lenses look great for longer with less scratches appearing on the surfaces. Anti- Smudge Treatments – this means any fingerprints or marks on the lens surface are much less visible . UV Protection – an important lens treatment for the protection of the eyes, eyelids and skin around the eyes. This treatment is important for both clear lenses if they are worn outside and for sunglasses. Tints – tints are available in a huge range of colours and depths of tint. A tint can be a solid colour or it can be a graduated tint. Tints can also be combined with popular mirrored coatings too. Anti-reflection treatment - Anti-reflection lens treatments eliminate annoying reflections from reaching your eyes. This treatment can allow up to 99.9% of light to reach the eyes and gives immense benefits to aid night driving, computer and electronic device use . It has an added benefit of letting you see more clearly and allows others to see your eyes clearly too. Photochromic Lenses – these lenses react to ultraviolet and visible light , changing from being clear indoors to becoming dark outside. This process allows for enhanced clarity of vision in varying indoor and outdoor environments. Polarising Lenses – in addition to being a tinted lens, these lenses also stop glare from being a problem from roads, water and snow. This feature improves contrast and gives great vision comfort.

MYOPIA MANAGEMENT We offer myopia (short- sightedness) management options for children. The aim of these treatments is to reduce the rate at which myopia progresses. This can be achieved by using special glasses lenses and or special contact lens options.
